The developers of the GNOME project have announced the release of the latest version, GNOME 3.8. The latest open source desktop environment for Linux and Unix systems brings along a number of new features. These features include new Clocks application, enhanced search functionality, new privacy settings and a number of design changes throughout the desktop environment. The redesigning will now aid in finding applications faster. Also, the Settings application has gained four new configuration panels.
The GNOME Project has officially released GNOME 3.8 today. This latest version of GNOME 3 delivers major new features, a brand new application and a host of smaller bug fixes and enhancements. Speaking on behalf of the GNOME Release Team, Matthias Clasen said, “We are excited to release this latest version of GNOME 3. It is an extremly strong release, and is a major update to the GNOME 3 experience. We would like to thank the entire GNOME community for their hard work and dedication.”
Highlights for GNOME 3.8 include:
- A redesigned application launching view, which makes finding applications easier than ever.
- Enhanced search, with an updated search results view and new controls for results.
- New privacy settings let you contol who has access to the content on your computer.
- A new classic mode for those who prefer a more traditional desktop experience.
- Improved animation rendering, resulting in smooth transitions and window resizing.
- A new Clocks application, which provides world clocks for different time zones as well as alarms, a stopwatch and timer.
- Heavily updated settings, with four new settings panels and major updates in many other places.
- Many of updates to GNOME applications, including major improvements to the performance of Web, UI enhancements to Documents and a new Contacts editing mode.

WebKit2 delivers a state-of-the-art web runtime to our platform, with increased responsiveness, security and stability, making Web 3.8 and all the applications using WebKit much more pleasant and exciting to use.”.
GNOME 3.8 comes for the first time with GNOME Classic for those who prefer a
traditional desktop experience. GNOME Classic configures the desktop to
include popular GNOME 2 features, but with the underlying functionalities of a
GNOME 3 desktop.
In GNOME 3.8 debuts a new core application called Clocks . Already in the preview release 3.6 This application allows you to display the date and time of all zones around the world including, also, a stopwatch, timer and alarms. In addition to clocks, novelties relating to Shell and privacy, we see the debut of GNOME Classic : Classic mode is a new feature created ad-hoc for those who want a more traditional desktop experience. GNOME Classic is built on the foundations of GNOME 3 in addition to a number of features such as the application menu, a menu "Places" and a switcher of windows along the bottom of the screen.
The latest release also brings improvements to a number of different parts of the desktop. “The Activities screen now shows the user's most frequently used applications and allows them to group applications into folders through a drag-and-drop interface that will be familiar to those who use Android or iOS devices. Bigger icons and previews and more generous spacing make both the Activities and Applications screens seem less cluttered,” the report stated
The web browser in GNOME 3.8 has also undergone a makeover and it now makes use of the multi-process WebKit2 API layer under the hood, which is expected to improve performance and stability.
